I also enjoy this issue, for it is the bottom-line when it comes down to the tangible reason for the existence of religion. What I mean by this is that there is no tangible evidence for ANYTHING in the field of revealed religion...except for the most basic premise: we are here. Naturally this has to be followed by the question: How did we get here? I believe that the most basic fundamental purpose for the existence of religion is to explain why we exist and how we got here.
I, too, see problems on both sides of the creation/evolution fence. Right now I do not believe that anyone has the complete answer. I do not believe the Bible should be taken as a literalist account that was projected into the minds of the human writers by God. There are far too many difficulties for the innerrantist to face. Also, many theists are accepting biological evolution as a viable explanation for the HOWS of creation, and that it is not incompatible with the Genesis account.
There are many insurmountable obstacles for the atheists who purport evolution as the COMPLETE answer apart from some creator. Michael Behe has an excellent site on the principles of "irreducible complexity".
Perhaps between the fundamentalists and the atheists, the answer lies somewhere inbetween? Is that called theistic evolution?
