Alan asked, "Why is there a need to resign (as an elder)?
I had lost confidence in the Governing Body. I had struggled for 3 years following 1975 waiting for them to acknowledge their responsibility for building up false expectations relative to the significance 1975.
I felt that I could not stand up in front of the congregation and represent them any more.
Prior to my letter of resignation I never mentioned my personal feelings to the other members of the Body of elders. If they weren't botherd by anything I didn't want to disturb their consciences.
It wasn't until I read "Crisis of Conscience" in 1984 that I finally understood why the Governing Body acted as it did relative to the post 1975 period. When I tried to help the rest of the elders to see the truth of the matter, none of them were ready to face it. A quarter of a century after 1975, they are still not ready to face it!
