Wanderer: Your experience rings true and matches my own which happened in the fall of 1992. Years ago, as late as the mid-1980s, an Elder could just resign and it would be read that way during the service meeting. In our Cong, we would generally tell the bro/sis that Bro. so-n-so stepped down because he has personal issues to resolve and we expect his return shortly. This acted to limit the negative rumors.
