I can definitely relate to what you said. The 1914 story was one of the things that originally convinced me the JW's had the truth. When I found out it was really half-truth and fabrication I was blown away.
I believe Crisis of Conscience by Ray Franz specifically outlines with references six or seven things that Russell said would happen in 1914. He then goes on to show how those predictions were altered to fit what really happened. It is those alterations most JW's are taught as truth just as we both were.
Apocalypse Delayed by James Penton also has info on this subject. If you haven't read either of these books they are very good sources of info on this and many other subjects.
I'm not sure what your current situation is or if you feel you can read these books since they are branded "apostate" but I hope you do read them. Both helped to convince me it was the WTS that spreads lies and not the so-called "apostates". The later are simply telling the real truth about the Org. that will not be honest about itself.
