I relate to how you thought growing up believing about 1914.
Russell actually predicted that 1914 would be the FURTHEST extent of mankinds governments, ending an anarchical Time Of Trouble. Jesus would then intervene and save the world, starting his Millenial Reign. Zion would be restored, that is the Jews would regain blessings from God.
It was NOT predicted that 1914 would be the start of a big war, but the END of the Great Tribulation. "The end of the Gentile Times" was taken to mean the END of GENTILE NATIONS!
Later on, in the late '20's through the '30's, Rutherford REINTERPRETED what was meant by all those prophecies.
