I'm baffled by your comments. I know about several brothers/sisters who were disfellowshipped for "apostasy" on my congregation in 1988-1989, even though they had only shared with relatives their doubts about the Watchtower. I know such details because my dad served in those judicial committees.
To say that nobody is disfellowshipped for independent thinking is stating the obvious if by thinking you mean having thoughts in your mind that nobody else knows. On the other hand, the moment you tell a trusted friend or a relative, you have provided enough cause for the formation of a judicial committee. And if you do not answer the inquisitorial questions to the elders’ liking, then you are out of the organization for good.
