You can type HTML codes straight into your posts.
The HTML to make a word bold looks like this:
<b>Bold</b>
Which results in this;
Bold
There are loads of basic HTML tutorials on the web - one of my favourites is called IDOCS (in the process of being renamed to MIKODOCS) which you can find by clicking here.
A good tip is to look at the HTML source code for pages with formatting you like. In Internet Explorer you do this by selecting Source from the View menu, and there is a similar command in Netscape.
