My wife too has fits of depression. In fact, unfortunately, she has become one of the most negative people I've ever met. Part of this is due to some rapid and extreme changes in her life - marriage, a new child, a new country and culture and the all the difficulties these bring. I hope that with time things will improve for her. In the meantime, I wait patiently and support her as best I can.
I see you have great affection and empathy for your brother-in-law. Your support should help him cope with the difficulties of his situation. I wish you family the best.
