I cannot say anything about the US numbers, but if you look at the (Western) European figures you'll notice that the current downward trend started circa 1990 (+/- 1 year). So, neither the Internet nor the "generation issue" can fully explain what's happening here.
Also, I agree with some others that the Internet has more impact than the WTS would like. It makes it MUCH easier for interested persons to see the other side (before the days of the Net, how much chance did someone have of meeting "apostates" or reading critical stuff? Now, all it takes is a mouse click), it makes it easier to leave (you are not that isolated anymore). The Internet has changed the situation fundamentally.
As per the WTS's tendency to put up new "official" web sites: these may change the quantity of pro-Witness info, but not the quality. It's the same old stuff again, just in a different package.
