I think number one is the more likely scenario. However, I don't think the growth will be as big as after '75.

I also think that half the GB quitting in disgust would not make a huge difference over the long term. It'd just be part of the history that gets buried, right along with other things.

Actually, having a rocky history doesn't bother me all that much. Many religions have very rocky, if not at times ugly, histories. They survive. The difference is, some religions don't lie or try to hide their past.

This month I've heard to two religious leaders apologizing for past acts. One was the Pope, the other I simply cannot remember, but that religion too admitted to and apologized for, wrongdoing.
