Your concerns about what the GB might do if given political power are well founded. In several Watchtowers they've already expressed what amounts to regret about not having the authority to kill rather than disfellowship people.
The problem is simple: Watchtower leaders are not, never have been, and never will be the heads of "God's earthly organization". "That which is crooked cannot be made straight."
As for concerns about Armageddon, my concern with boogeymen is on a par.
