As a civil society we do respect and allow for diversity. However, society, any society, tolerates diversity up to the point that it defines it not to be in the best interest of the society at large. Hence, secular society recognizes the effects of bigamy and forbids it in spite of it being a strongly held religious belief of the Latter Day Saints.

That is pretty much what I said to AF, that in the end if people have made an informed choice and their chosen community accommodates society at large then the community should be respected as well as the individuals making it.

My question still stands, do you define a family shunning a family member because that member no longer believes in certain doctrines as a "spiritual" act? If so please define.

I am not sure what you mean by "spiritual act." In my response I will use "spiritual act" referring to acts supporting our aspirations.

Shunning someone solely because they believe differently is not what I would call a spiritual act. As an aside, the Society does not support that notion either.

Shunning someone (family member or not) because they seek to divide me from my aspirations I think would be a spiritual act. As an aside, the Society does support that notion.
