Yes, we Bethelites held a reverence for the Gilead missionaries, much the same as the
local congo members felt about Bethelites! It always amazed me how people would just
GIVE us clothes, food, money - whatever they thought we needed. It would have been
easy for me to take advantage of this, as I saw many others do. Some even bragged about
how local congregation members were "easy marks", and could always be counted on if
you were a little short on cash, etc. If a group of locals asked you to go out with them to a
movie, and you were broke, all you had to do was decline the offer and meekly say, "I'm
tapped" or simply "Ican't". They would nearly always assume you meant that you had no
money, and would say, "Don't worry about it, we'll cover you." When invited to dinner,
Bethelites would surely get served first - before Sisters or the elderly!
