It's not "shunning" to decline to listen to 5 hours of empty blather every week. Meetings, assemblies, and bare minimum particiption in field service consume around 600 hours per year, the equivalent of about 3.5 months of full time employment per year. If you are a servant, especially an elder, especially one who gives many talks and handles committees, etc., double it. Not much time to be a father or be of any real help to one's fellowman.
