I have often told him and others "he is so smart, I don't understand why he can't see through this"You might be interested to know that many people that are recruited by cults are idealistic, smart people. Sometimes because the way they are trained to think, it's not very easy for them to "see through it", even if they are very intelligent.
People that are able to avoid cults do so not so much because of their intelligence, but much more because of their previous awareness of how cults operate.
