It's really not that hard if you combine two elements:
a family protecting its own interests, feeling that if it becomes vulnerable it will fall apart,
and
a large corporation, which has become an icon that is basically worshipped. It regularly sacrifices the needs of "one" for the needs of many. The most important thing is to survive and be on top. Largely ego-driven, most always by males.
Doctrine is really not important to them in the end, it is unity, power and community. THE CLUB (see link below)
This is really the main reason why it is so difficult for many to leave, not doctrine. "Where else can we go?" means, "What other community offers this combination (teaching, parenting, doctrine and disillusion with the world) that I am basically comfortable with?"
