When I was first studying with the witnesses they showed me all the instances in the bible of tragic things around birthdays. And they included the slaughter of the baby boys.
That said, I think you are right though, if God had wanted us to not celebrate birthdays, he'd have said so explictly.
We celebrate birthdays when we think of it and feel like it.
