Then he asked, 'assuming that Jesus is just a god, is he a true god (God) or a false god (God)?'
Amazing,
Before the question can be answered context MUST be established.
If the phrase "true God" means Supreme Being, then Jesus is not "true God." He is simply God to us by virtue of the fact that he created us and has authority over us as creator and redeemer both. Thomas testified to this fact as did John.
Since the expression "true God" has been established to mean Supreme Being, the expression "false God" does not apply. This is because there are other uses of the term God which properly apply to the many other God's that exist in scripture such as Moses, the prophets and teachers and the King's of Israel. Our Lord even used this fact in his defense. But they are never used in THAT precise sense or context and are therefore not false God's. The person asking the question ignores proper use and context and is attempting to trap the uninformed. Then again it could be that they do not understand scripture and are only repeating what they have been told.
