All of the religions of the past including the Judeo/Christian/Muslim lineage have infused into their sacred texts numerological patterns. Why this is so, scholars have pondered over for centuries. The general concensus is that this was a way of communicating to the "inniated" without overtly stating ones intention. Much like the "sealing of the books" as mentioned in Daniel, this coding system had meaning to a few inniates but was left as a mystery to the "masses".
I suspect that the 144,000 is in this catagory and symbolizes somthing different for every one that wants to claim to have "knosis". On the other hand I have read some interesting speculations on it and will see if I still have the references and post them if I can find them.
