Rick,
I don’t know if you are aware of the East German JWs being persecuted by the Stasi. I’m familiar with the workings of the G-2, Communist Cuba secret police, and the brothers were carefully watched by the G-2. The G-2 was so corrupt and evil that sometimes brothers would be blackmailed by undercover female operatives. If a CO, for example, was committing adultery with a G-2 operative, she would ask him to become a traitor or be exposed as an adulterer. Anyhow he was going to be disfellowshipped, so a few brothers in high places became G-2 agents.
The most fascinating thing about the G-2 and the JWs was that the secret police became surprised at the level of banality among Jehovah’s Witnesses conversations, and the G-2 realized very early that JWs were no threat to the state. Nevertheless, they kept up the persecution for decades until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, and all of a sudden, the G-2 had bigger fish to fry. After 1992, the dissident movement took off in Cuba, and the G-2 now keeps busy arresting and monitoring dissidents. Fortunately for our brothers and sisters, the Watchtower is experiencing a rapprochement with the Communist authorities. Do you remember the pictures of the Governing Body members signing Bibles for Communist officials in Cuba, pictures published in the Watchtower?
