It's behavior that certainly would be frowned upon by the leadership at both the ward and stake level and would not be an official policy. Unfortunately, however, I think there are more people who engage in such petty behavior than there should be.
What attracted me to Mormonism was that it answered all of the Great Questions and is the only theology that makes any kind of consistent
sense. If I weren't Mormon, I'd be an atheist.
There are several newsgroups for Mormons and ex-Mormons on the web. I don't subscribe to any of them, because they usually degenerate into endless arguments on doctrinal issues. Also, some on the ex-mormon side tend to play very loose with the truth, so it's hard to know what's real and what's completely made up unless you have been in the LDS church
