I read a book by a British 90+ woman (Elsie To) who is now very prominate (still!) in Hong Kong Government. She went to China with the Bretheren Church in the fifties in order to convert the heathens. She became so disenchanted because of the silly rules the Brethern Church inflicted on the converted Chinese. e.g. the poor farm people desperately trying to grasp the fundimentals of christianity were to be lectured if they didn't wear a hat to church etc etc etc. It drove her nuts and didn't seem relevent to the big picture at all to her. I found so much of what she said about her experience with the Bretherens also applied to my experience with the JWs. It's like religion doesn't know where to draw the line of control. Give em' an inch and they take a mile! Elsie went on to do so much good in China and Hong Kong, without the aid of the Bretherens, and simply by using her commonsense and boundless energy. How wicked eh?
