No, FORCING medical treatment on adults is not done all the time. It may be done in cases where someone is brought in unconscious and the doctors have to make decisions to save a life right that moment.
BTW, the second opinion was that my husband should have the transfusion. The second doctor's reasoning was no more sound. The reason was that they said he'd get stronger, faster with a transfusion.
Don't put too much faith in doctors. The moment we turn our decision making over to them, above our own right to make decisions, we will be subject to the whims of economics. My husband and I both believe that transfusion issue was more about money than about his health.
His recovery was remarkable, better than most people who've had heart surgery. It would have been the wrong decision to have that transfusion.
Doctors do unnecessary medical treatments too frequently to risk turning our rights over to them.
And really, do you actually want to lose your right to make decisions about your own body and life?
