A couple of items of clarification:
1. The top level of LDS church leadership is the First Presidency consisting of the President, First Counselor and Second Counselor. All are considered prophets, seers and revelators. When the President is incapacitated or unavailable, the First Counselor can act in his stead with full authority and revelation. When the President and First Counselor are incapacitated, the Second Counselor can act in their stead. If all three members of the First Presidency are incapacitated, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (also considered Prophets, seers and revelators) can act in their stead, with authority going from most senior member down.
2. Take anything Reed Benson says with a grain of salt. If you read his personal papers on the LDS faith, you will find that his real reason for leaving was the LDS church's patriarchal form of leadership (Benson and wife are hard-core feminists). Benson just used his grandfather's condition to justify his decision.
