Matthew, Mark and Daniel.
Daniel 12:1 says, "And there will certainly occur a time of distress such as has not been made to occur since there came to be a nation until that time."
Then Matthew 24 and Mark 13 specifically refer to the "great tribulation" as prophesied by Daniel. Matthew after making a reference to Daniel's prophecy says at verse 21: "for then there will be great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world's beginning until now, no, nor will occur again. In fact, unless these days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the chosen ones those days will be cut short."
So basically you have a one-time event, prophesied to occur to the Jews, a great tribulation like none that had happened in history before and unless the days were cut short "no flesh" would be saved. If this is dealing with the Jews then this would mean a time when the Jews would face total genocide. Even so, apparently this would be successful to the point where out of the whole nation the majority of the Jews would perish and only a remnant left remaining. That is, the days were cut short to at least save a remnant.
More Jews died in the HOLOCAUST than were saved, 2/3rds of the nation perished. 6 million Jews. The HOLOCAUST is said to be the "worst event in human history" so it did shock the world. Certainly the destruction of Jerusalem in 70CE does not qualify for the magnitude of what is described, but the HOLOCAUST does.
What is further amazing to me is that some jump on the opportunity to claim this event took place in 70CE to the non-Christian Jews, yet for the modern-day fulfillment there seems to be the idea that this happens to spiritual Israel and the Jews are not figured into this at all. In fact, it does happen to "spiritual Israel" specifically Jehovah's Witnesses who had to wear the "purple triangle" assigned to them by the Nazis. That links the Jews and Jehovah's Witnesses togeter in a special way. Spiritual and fleshly Israel. But the Jewish nation is the primary target of this great tribulation prophesied 2000 years ago by Daniel, even before the Messiah first appeared in 29CE.
Still this tribulation was to be over and the Jews returned to Palestine before the Messiah was to arrive in kingdom power. In fact, at least 45 years was to pass from the time the Jews returned after the "trampling of the holy ones" and the actual kingdom being set up, and all within an 80-year period from World War I. This timetable is fulfilled for a 1992 advent of the Messiah, 45 years after the Jews return to Palestine in 1947.
The Holocaust, thus was this shocking event in which the majority of the "holy ones" that is the Jewish nation would perish in an event that had never happened before. That is, mass extermination attempt of a certain genotype to achieve ethnic cleansing to make the world a better place for the Christian Nazi Aryan.
Quite shocking, to say the least.
