I guess your sister-in-law needs to learn to respect their religious beliefs and just not give them any Chistmas checks... Maybe she could check this out by making sure that they know this is not a bonus, but rather, this is a Christmas gift, and that she would understand their not taking it if they chose to do so for the sake of their religious beliefs.
I bet she could save the company some cash, just by spelling it out, and calling it what it is.
