Hi WP;
You asked:
"Wasn't there some article in a recent WT about this non-JW married to a JW wife who said he didn't get baptized because he feels unable to live up to the high moral standards of Witnessdom"?
I do remember seeing the same thing, I think it was a short blurb on the back of the magazine. When I saw it I thought to myself, boy is this a bunch of BS or what?
One of my favorite memories of "high standards" had to to with TV. It seems that the P.O.'s mother-in-law, long time JW, had bought a device to pickup HBO and several other of the hot movie channels on her dish. This was the old big dishes that first came out. Anyway she had a chip that allowed her to get these channels without paying. Seems an elder in another congregation was selling them, and installing them for JW's. I am not sure if he had a worldly market also, but plenty of JW's were buying them.
Anyway the P.O.'s mother-in-law approached another member of my old congregation, who had just purchased her system, and asked if she would be interested in getting the chip for free movie channels. This other sister really got upset. She didn't care much for the P.O.'s wife, and had seen first hand some of the things his wife had gotten away with, so she made some waves. She went to another elder. Told him the story, and was told that he would check it out.
Well when he didn't get back to her she called him. His story was that the chip was paid for by the P.O's mother-in-laws other daughter, who wasn't a JW, so it really wasn't the mother-in-law who was at fault! It didn't matter that it was the mother-in-laws house, it didn't matter that it was the mother-in-laws TV, or that it was the mother-in-laws system, or that the mother-in-law and the P.O.'s wife both watched, taped, and loaned out movies they had gotten illegaly, NO none of this mattered. They were just innocent victims, yeah right!
The other sister didn't give up very easy, so she contacted the elders from the hall where the elder was selling these chips. I don't know if thigs were stopped, but there sure were a lot of really mad JW's who gave the sister who reported things the cold shoulder for years. I personally know for a fact that the chip was not removed, and that the movies continiued to be watched, taped and loaned out within the congregation.
Remember, it's not the crime you do, but who you know that counts. And I will use my favorite word to describe this action "DOUBLE STANDARDS", not "HIGH MORAL STANDARDS"!!!
ANDY: who found out the hard way you don't complain about the P.O. or his family, expecially his wife!!!!!
