I know of no religion that wasn't started by someone claiming special powers. While the bible condemns pychics out of one side of its pages, out of the other side it condones paranormal activities from its prophets and priests. They saw angels, burning bushes, walked on water, healed etc. The bible writers just felt they had a corner on the market or had the notion that their soothsayers were better than the soothsayers of the Egyptians or any one else living at the time. And of course their soothsayers were right because the Israelites believed that they were. Being special in spiritual matters is quite a common phenomenon.
