News of the predicament spread through the little town? How do you know that? Did you go and tell everyone or did you just assume because everyone you saw in the town, strangers, children, small pets, came up and offered their sympathies?
You only have credibility if you can demonstrate the JW congregation had specific knowledge of your problem, and even then you still don't get much mileage with me. I have a hard time with people who gripe about not getting charity the way they feel they should or condemning a group of people because they didn't behave in an expected way. Hit an atheist forum some time and read the wonderful stories of charitable Christians. Hmm. Ireland comes to mind...
