That's true! Old St. Nick really was originally the Devil.
But per Scandinavian folklore there were once two of them. The Devil, Old St. Nick, and the good St. Nicholas who is based on some kindly monk who liked kids.
One was black and one was white, and the black St. Nick and the good St. Nicholas rode in the chariot together, with guess who in the back?
Later on they dropped the black St. Nick, and we have the chubby nice chimmey guy now. But the old reference still sticks.
