Shunning doesn't have to ruin lives. I suppose when someone has invested their ALL into the JW's, it could put a big ding in life of course. Like if their job is tied up with other JW's businesses.
But even then a life can be rebuilt. I'm shunned, but it hasn't destroyed my life either.
But it has caused me heartache.
This banning of someone who posts inanely is a FORM of shunning. It has to potential to hurt and embarrass. This very discussion is likely hurtful.
The practice of shunning goes from mildly marking someone and avoiding more contact than necessary, to the person losing his friends, faith, and lifelihood. On this forum, banning would have a very mild impact on Fred's life. But it still has the potential to hurt him simply because he won't get in line with popular thought.
