I have no doubt that today's JW parents are much less harsh in their punishment than they were say, 25 years ago.
And I have no doubt that many "worldly" parents hit their children more often 25+ years ago.
But it wasn't just that JWs were acting in a parenting style that was common those many years ago.
Back then the WT magazine strongly ENCOURAGED parents to whack their children. It was the FDS and not just the "fashion" of the day that told them through their spirit-directed literature to whack them.
