while there are numerous studies of JW's that show
high levels of various mental ills (depression, guilt
multiple personalities, etc.), I feel much of this
information misses a critical point.
The organization encourages, feeds on, and exploits
one particular abberation.
Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder.
I see this constantly in the obsession to "get my
hours" in, I see it in the endless appeals to go to
unrewarding meetings, the endless rules and the sick
compulsion to control every area of rank and file
life. You can see it too in the sister who won't
touch doorknobs with a bare hand, who can't stop
washing, who must vacuum the whole house everyday, etc.
Small children, who can't understand, are frequently
told "to count the number of times the speaker says
Jehovah" or Jesus and write it down. Teenage girls,
with their attention drifting during meetings, will
write their name in calligraphy , over and over and
over and over....
And then there's us! Trained by this sickness, we are
still compelled to write and analyse and post....
Well, Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa
Still, it's interesting to speculate what could happen
if this "magic spell" of compulsion is ever lifted
or REVERSED in the rank and file.
No wonder the Brooklyn Masters are alarmed.
