As one who doesn't have any involvement in Halloween, I never quite understood the lure even as a child. I would dress-up between the ages of 5-10 in a costume that suffocated me and the polymers would give me hives (so I didn't even need a mask when the night was done).
Ah, yes, those nostalgic childhood memories. The neighborhood pedophile that tried inviting kids into his house ("a trick for a treat" as I remember our babysitter telling her boyfriend); the neighborhood child-hater who put razorblades in apples and snickers bars; the ambush on our trick-or-treat group of kids, where a gang of high school thugs would throw pomogranites and red paint at our babysitter until she stood in the middle of the street sobbing uncontrollably.
Yes, that is the "paradise" that I learned some fondly hoped for, a world much like the futures depicted in science fiction horror flicks where Halloween could one day become a cherished daily way of life. A time of year where anyone who ran out of candy had their car splattered with paint, and where some supermarket ads even touted the "savings" in property damage when measured against the cost of buying their candy on sale.
Sorry, Alan, but you got me started reminiscing on the "good old days" when I was part of that whole stinking mess, and felt obliged to celebrate it to keep with the status quo. ;-)
