Hi Da,
Thanks for explaining this to me. But this is easily resolved. You skipped something.
So I'm going to just put away my views for now and just ask you to explain something to me based upon what you said, since you have all this worked out in your mind.
Let's got back to your first reference which is Luke 22:7.
It says: "The day of the unfermented cakes now arrived, on which the poassover victim must be sacrificed; and he dispatched Peter and John, ssaying: "Go and get the passovr ready for us to eat."
Now here's my questions:
1) At what time of the day do you think this is happening? What time is Jesus sending these disciples out to get the meal ready? Is it in the morning? The early afternoon?
Most people including the Society think it might have been early that day.
Problem is, this is the same day the lambs are sacrificed. And we all know the lambs are sacrificed on Nisan 14th, don't we? So that brings us to question #2.
2) Exactly what time are you claiming the lambs were sacrificed?
Now according to Josephus, the lambs in the thousands were sacrificed at the temple from the ninth to the eleventh hours. Here's the quote:
Wars of the Jews, Book VI,ix,3: "So these high preists, upon the coming of their feast which is called the Passover, when they slay their sacrifices, from the ninth hour to the eleventh..."
Also, since you mentioned orthodox Jewish tradition. Have you ever heard of the Mishna? It gives specific details of exactly how all the Jewish holidays were to be celebrated. Guess what time they mandate the Passover lambs be sacrificed? Specifically at the time of the evening sacrifice. It was very specific. That is, it gave specific instructions that on Passover the regular sacrifices were to be moved up an hour so that the Passover sacrifices would start right on time. And if Passover fell on a sabbath day, which required extra sacrifices, then they too were moved up even earlier so that the Passover sacrifices could begin specifically at the normal time for the evening sacrifices, which according to the Mishna was 2:30 p.m.
Now the time the lambs were sacrificed is critical to this discussion. Why?
Because if we are to go by the actual historical records of the time during the temple period and the lambs were sacrificed around 3:00 p.m., the same time Jesus died, by the way. Then Jesus could have sent his disciples out that morning and it would have still been the day the lambs were sacrificed since that day did not end until after sunset.
So when I read Luke that says Jesus sent his disciples out on the day the lambs were sacrificed, was that it was sometime in the morning. He sent two of them, one to prepare the meal and get the room ready and one to take the lamb to the temple to be sacrificed as REQUIRED BY LAW at that time. And then after sundown they had that meal.
Only problem is, after sundown, it became the next day, did it not?
And if so, then it must have been the 15th. A sabbath day. The official "first day of unfermented cakes" when leaven was banned from the homes. So it would appear that the Passover is eaten on that sabbath day.
Now to make things worse, when I check with the Jews, come to find out they always celebrate the Sedar meal on Nisan 15th, not Nisan 14th.
So I'm confused now, how Jesus could die on Nisan 14th if the lambs not sacrificed until late afternoon of Nisan 14th, meaning after sundown it became the 15th.
So.. Can you please explain to me how you work this out? How is it if Jesus sent his disciples out on the very day the lambs were sacrificed, which is Nisan 14th and those lambs were not sacrificed until a 3:00 p.m., how it is Jesus still could die on Nisan 14th when they didn't eat that meal until after sundown, which was the next day, Nisan 15th?
Please explain just this one point. I can't get past Luke 22:7.
Thanks....
By the way, per Jewish tradition, the Sedar meal is eaten on the 15th and not the 14th. Did they get it wrong?
Recapping, here are your two specific questions:
1) At what time are you claiming the lambs were sacrificed?
2) At what time are you generally claiming that Jesus sent his disciples out?
If you answer those two questions specifically, I will understand how you are interpreting Luke 22:7. Thanks.
Cheers,
