I knew several JWs who were shaken up somewhat by the change. My dad is one of them. I know personally, I tried real, real hard to make the new understanding "my own" when it first came out. It was tough to do, though.
A few months after I quit the JWs, I read a book by Anthony Buzzard that explained Jesus' meaning of "this generation" which was consistent with the JW new understanding. His explanations were much better than the Watchtower's (probably helped by the fact that he wasn't promoting "new light" and attempting to extinguish the "old light" at the same time). The book was also published several months before the Watchtower change occurred.
