I think what you say is generally true with the popular use of the terms among the general population. It is very ..very subjective. ...And this is what has caused the sociologist so much grief, since they are trying to evaluate these groups systematically and from an objective viewpoint.

Therefore, the rigorous use of these terms amoung sociologists is quite another story than the popular usage.
