I suspect that they don't really believe the 'truth' but have a programmed belief that it's nessasary to follow the org. That might explain the reliance on those phrases you mention that trigger compliance.
I think it'd also explain why so many so drop away never hear from anybody, kind of get forgotten. I suspect that deep in the subconcous they want to drop away too, but their program hasn't reached END yet.
