Having grown up as a JW I am very tolerant of peoples beliefs. It bothered me about 10 seconds that I didn't have birthdays, Christmas, Student Council, etc. Some Atheists are knee jerk on what happens in public schools. I think the scientific community has an obligation to fight the creationists about banning the teaching of evolution but who cares what personal fantasy life people want to live.
Science stands alone as an institution. Society will always have to knock on the doors of science to solve the problems of hunger, disease, & the advancement of quality of life in general.
In my own case I can say that I have never had an unambiguous answer to any prayer. If God is a real "person" than he ought to say something to the 6 billion people on earth along with the appropriate miracles.
There is a vast literature dealing with skepticism. You ought to read some of it. Start with Carl Sagan's "Demon Haunted World". After you read his book THEN come back here and tell us how you feel.
