The Wildings
We recently took a weekend vacation to Glenwood Springs. We rode Amtrak to get there. It was all quite an adventure. We had a blast. Riding a train through the Rockies is something that is so cool, it is hard to describe. Amtrak has its pluses and minuses. It seems hard to imagine it being used for efficient cross-country travel, but for a weekend getaway near by, it is quite an experience. To quote the great band Aerosmith, "Life's a journey, not a destination." :-) Here are a few pictures.
There are 28 tunnels (I think) between Denver and Glenwoods Springs. Emily lost count after about 6. We were on the last car of the train in both directions which makes for nice pictures out the back window.
Anna found a friend on the train. Don't remember his name. But his turtle was named Mr.T. He was very protective of Mr. T.
Emily and Joe thought it was very cool to eat lunch on the train. Laura - not so much.
This is the Hot Springs across the street from our hotel. It was hot. And fun.
At one point when we were train watching, a Union Pacific coal train pulled up and stopped in front of us. The Engineers hopped out. Engineer One went for coffee. Engineer Two stopped and talked to us for a bit. He asked us if we wanted to see the inside of his locomotive and said we could take pictures on the front if we wanted. That was very cool. Emily (and dad) have never been inside a running locomotive before. Later, when our train was delayed 6 hours, we joked that we should just find another coal train and hitch a ride back to Denver on it.
Standing underneath said train.
Playing in the Colorado River. It was cold.
We found a cool park while waiting for our delayed train. It had a one-man (kid) merry-go-round thing. The girls loved it and fought over it for an hour. The rotation axis was inclined (like the earth) so by shifting your weight you could make it spin all by yourself. Emily figured it out in about 30 seconds flat and then refused to get out. Gonna have to make one of those. And Emily has requested pink.
Emily likes Whipped Cream. There is a funny story about the guy behind her, but it is too long to write. Ask us some time.
This is the Hotel we stayed at. The Hotel Colorado. It is where the Teddy Bear was invented. Emily liked that story and proceeded to tell every waitress all weekend about it. Everyone tried to tell us the hotel was haunted, but we didn't see any of that. Maybe next time.
Coal trains look like snakes from a distance.
