RILEY
Links to the Helbron family come from the
marriage of my maternal great-grandparents, James Milton Herndon and Mary
Catherine “Mollie” Riley in February 1867 in Huntsville, MO. Their daughter,
Ida Josephine Herndon, married Robert Marion Best; their daughter, Nellie Voil
Best married John Rudolph Helbron.
In 1973, Gerald M. Petty published Petty,
Wright, Riley and Related Families, which served as one of the primary
references on the Riley family well into the mid-1990’s. Since then, other
Riley family researchers, principally Robert S. Riley and Gary W. Riley, and
later, Brenda Whitten, David Austill, Trish Spencer, B. J. Merrell, and Dodd
Brown provided significant information to update and/or correct Petty’s
original work. One particularly significant finding was a modification to the
parents of Abraham Riley (22 Jul 1776 – 22 Sep 1866). This new information
indicated that Abraham’s parents were James Riley I and Celia Maxfield of Berks
County, PA. According to Bob Riley, Celia, Abraham, and other siblings, moved
to Hardin County, KY about 1799 following James’ death. Then, about 1815,
Abraham and his wife, Mary Catherine Dale, moved across the Ohio River to
Harrison County, IN and then, in 1821-2, moved west to Randolph County, MO,
where they settled near the town of Huntsville, where they are considered to be
one of the region’s earliest settlers. One of Abraham and Mary Riley’s sons was
John Frederick (13 Jan 1815 – 18 Sep 1866), the first gunsmith in
Huntsville. John married (1) Elizabeth Ann Patton, daughter of Thomas Patton
and Winnefred (?) and (2) Mary Elizabeth Samuel. “Mollie” Riley was the eldest
of John Frederick and Elizabeth’s daughters.
Research to-date has been unable to confirm an
exact emigration date of this Riley family, likely due in part to variations in
surname spelling. It appears that William Reyley (RN=240), son of Thomas,
emigrated prior to 1743 from County Cork in Ireland. Prior to 1820, there was no requirement to
keep passenger lists. Many of those lists that were compiled have not survived
and, of those that did, most contain only names of males over 16.
A limited lineage on the Patton surname related to this Riley family is also
provided.
