| The cost of building a pond is going to very as widely as the number of ponds. No pond is going to cost the same as another pond even if it is identical. Cost will vary depending on what you have already, location and size. And then there are things you might buy for the pond like a shovel that you will use for other uses so is that part of the pond cost? The big four expences are:
1. The Pump
2. The Liner.
3. The Rocks.
4. Electrical both installation and operating costs.
You will need to spend some money on the pump a cheap one will cost you several times the difference between it and a good pump in operating costs alone and it will not last.
The liner: You have to buy a good rubber liner the vinyl ones will just not do. If you are using a preformed one you have to install it correctly or you will be buying them every year.
The Rocks: If you live where you can get rocks for free you can save some big bucks. The bad part about buying rocks is that the hauling cost is almost as much as the rocks. Well you always wanted a pickup truck anyway....
If an Electrician has to install the power for the pump that could run more then any other item. A ground fault interrupter is absolutely essential, your life may depend on it. If you don't know what that is, you need an Electrician. Operation cost of the pump is hard to determine even after you have the pump installed. Figure on about twenty dollars a month, but it depends on how much you pay for electricity and how much the pump uses. Most people keep the pump running 24/7 365 days a year.
Below is a link to a spread sheet that details all of the items I bought to build MY pond. Your cost will be different. The good news is that once the pond is built the cost of upkeep is low. The big things being the cost of electricity for the pump and plants you buy for the pond. And of course the odd $30,000 Koi....
