| As man progresses in his understanding of mathematics, physics, and the sciences, I hold to the opinion that he will never abandon religion completely. Though it may change in form and concept, even in purpose, it will always exist in one iteration or another. This belief is founded on the theory that man has a need for it. Whether it is by divine design, biological adaptation, or a necessary construction of our metal/emotional state, it is my contention that the historical evidence indicates man is instinctively drawn to religiosity. The first and simplest explanation for mans tendency towards religious systems, is that God created us with an inherent desire to have a relationship with him. That is what drives us to search him out and serve him. The second explanation is that it is an adaptation from out evolutionary past. Our mind developed an ability to imagine things unseen. This gave us an advantage in allowing us to exersize risk assessment and avoid hidden dangers. A side-effect of this is that we imagine a higher reality to govern our existence. The third explanation is that it is a defense mechanism created by our subconscious to cope with our fear of death and the uncontrollable. This allows us to commit our faculties to more productive pursuits. |
