To say that religious diversity starts with its founder may be true because every man has his own vision. When a spiritual leader establishes himself, he is going to do things slightly (or very) different than those who came before. However, I believe that true diversity comes from the followers.  After a leader's death, there is sometimes a leadership vaccum. This can lead to a fracturing of a movement as each follower takes his own idea of what the leader would have wanted and expounds upon it. After a few generations you can end up with hundreds of distinct sects.
