When Nietzsche said God was dead, what he was infering was that man had created God to explain the world around him.  Since we had developed science, we no longer needed God.

Man had not turned his back on the concept of God in recent times. An explenation for man's continual obsession with God and spirituality might be explained by the assertion that man cannot face the reality of his own mortality, so he creates religion for himself so he can function in the world.
