Project: 1908 Edwardian Under things
Status: Started, But Pause For Now.
Fabric: 45" Wide, Bleached Muslin
Patten Rating So Far: Intermediate, If Youre A Beginner Like Me, I Would Highly Recommend A Sewing Buddy For This Pattern.
Since I wanted to make a corset like Kate Winslet had in TITANIC, I decided I better start off making the under things first. Thats when I began searching for 1912 patterns on the internet. I found this pattern from folkwear and I decided to go ahead and purchase the pattern because it said Edwardian on the cover. I thought thats what the 1912 era was called. I later found out it was dated from 1908 and technically that's when the Edwardian Era is (1901-1910).
I thought I could modify it to the 1912era, but looking at some images and fashion plates from the teens era the style of the 1908 under things was different from the 1910s era. Since the idea of modifying the pattern was confusing I decided to make it as is from 1908. I will continue this pattern when I make the 1909 Beatrix skirt and jacket (see
page 2 of future sewing projects)
Here is a sketch of what the finished garments looks like.
Here Are Some Examples of The Finished Under things, Made By Other People, Using The Folkwear Pattern:
Picture Used With Permission By Corsets Jardiniere
Here is Folkwear's version that they made. As shown from the example page. You can see the petticoat made at knee length.
Things I Do Not Like About This Pattern So Far:
1. Plackets
2. The instructions for the assembly of the plackets and attaching them to the clothing are not very good. The experienced sewer that I was working with back in NY was stumped and confused and she has put plackets on before.
3. They updated this pattern after I bought it and they added bigger sizes. If I can't adjust the sizes that I have now, I will order a new copy at a later date.
4. The whole pattern construction and instructions is way too detailed.
5. Beware gussets and yolks are also in this pattern.
Things I Like About This Pattern So Far:
1: On the instructions sheet there is a brief history about the Edwardian Under things.
2. On the camisole pattern piece there is a cutting line for todays modern waist and a rational waist for the 1908 s-curve.
3. On the petticoat pattern piece there is a cutting line for a knee length/calf (short petticoat), and a cutting line for an ankle length (longer petticoat).
4. There are instructions for handmade crochet lace edges (if you do not want to use the pre-made lace) and there are also instructions for feather stitch and the buttonhole stitch
5. It is a cute looking pattern, and I really like the design picture. If I ever made this i would want it to look exactly like the cover. I think it is my vision of the perfect under things.
