In
Aikido, all movement is based on a force that pulls the body or pushes the
body. The force may come as a grab from the rear or a punch (atemi)
to the face. In any case, it is the basic principle of Aikido to move in
when pulled, or to pivot away when pushed. In this way, Aikido redirects
the force of the attack until it is no longer a threat, and weakens the
opponent by taking him off-balance in the process. In this weakened
position, the attacker then becomes susceptible to various forms of
controls (ways of directing the attacker to a final pin), or throws (ways
of getting rid of the attacker) |

MORIHEI UESHIBA As a young man,
Ueshiba Morihei (born December 14, 1882) had an unusual interest in the
martial arts, philosophy, and religion. The environment of his youth, one
of religious discipline and tradition, had an enormous effect on the
course of his later life. |
FUMIO TOYODA Aikido Association of America is the largest organization under a single Shihan-level instructor in the United States. With growth continuing at its present pace, AAA will soon be to be the largest of any Aikido organization in America. And, more importantly, Aikido can now be found in almost every major city in America. While it is easy to talk about this growth as a natural process, it is truly only through the physical work of Toyoda Shihan, traveling and sacrificing on a daily basis with the same intensity and energy he learned as a young trainee at Ichikukai Dojo, that this has occurred. |
