Carl Mays (16-13) vs. Whit Wyatt (21-9)
“If I had one . . . game to win, and I could any pitcher in major league history to start that game, I’d choose Whit Wyatt from 1941 . . .” Tim Brennan, September, 2002.
Well, here it is. Wyatt has hinted at retirement so this could be the last game of his career. He’ll hold nothing back and, of course, everyone on both teams is available to pitch . . . arms can rest over the winter!
Wyatt gets into a little trouble right away, though. JH Lloyd singles, moves to second on a force, and Bill Terry walks to bring up Mickey Mantle with 2 on and 2 out. The Mick flies weakly to Buck Leonard in left and the threat goes by.
Carl Mays gives up a leadoff single to Eddie Collins. He then tosses a wild pitch to advance Collins a base. A force moves him to third with one out. Josh Gibson singles Collins home and the Sluggers draw first blood in Game Seven.
The pitchers breeze into the
fourth. Mantle begins the Cincy
4th with a triple to right-center.
Reggie Jackson follows with a tremendous home run to deep right
to give
the Kids a 2-1 lead! What a blast! Frank Baker follows with a single . . . Wyatt
looks hittable all of a sudden. With Sam
Crawford up, the Kids call for a hit-and-run . . . and Crawford sends
the ball
into the gap in right-center for a run-scoring double!
Carlton Fisk walks and the Sluggers confer on
the mound with Wyatt. They’ll stick with
him for perhaps one more batter. Paul Molitor steps in with nobody out.
He strikes out. Here’s JH Lloyd. He walks and the Sluggers have seen
enough. With Joe Dimaggio
coming up, Wyatt is relieved by Don Newcombe. Joe D rolls a tough grounder to Banks at
short, no way he’ll make the play . . . but
he tries
and throws the ball away allowing 2 Kids to score!
It’s 5-1
The Kids attack again in the 5th. Reggie and Baker lead off with singles placing runners at the corners with no one out. In comes Randy Myers for the Sluggers. He strikes out Crawford and up steps Fisk. He strikes out as well, bringing up Molitor. Mollie slams it into the LF bleachers for a spirit-breaking 3-run HR. The Kids are now up 9-1!
Mays now works methodically through 6 innings, throwing strikes and letting his fielders do their thing. After six innings pitched, he’s given up just 3 hits.
After giving up a leadoff walk to Baker in the 7th, Myers is relieved by Jack Morris. Morris gets 2 outs but gives up a double to center by Molitor and Baker comes around to score the Kids’ tenth run of the game!
In the 7th, the Sluggers wake up a bit. A hit, a walk and an error load the bases. Ken Boyer crushes a Mays pitch and smacks a grand slam home run to cut the lead to 10-5. That’s Boyer’s 6th post-season HR! Dykstra and Collins follow with singles and, with 2 out, the Kids go to the pen. In comes Sparky Lyle, trying to get the Kids to the point where Phil Regan might be able to close it out. Lyle gets Cedeno to fly out – we go to the 8th with the Kids up 10-5!
With one out, the Kids have created 1st
and 3rd
and Jack Morris gives way to Clem Labine
on the
Josh Gibson begins the home 8th with a homer to left. 10-6, Cincy. Herman and Klu are retired but Banks singles to keep the inning alive. In comes Phil Regan, hoping to get 4 outs without giving up 4 runs.
Regan faces Buck Leonard and STRIKES OUT! We go to the 9th, with the Kids up by 4 runs.
Labine turns in another fine performance as he retires the Kids with minimal fuss.
