Cincinnati Kids at Louisville Sluggers     Game Six         October 2, 1009

 

Mort Cooper (12-11) vs. Mike Scott (15-14)

 

Can the Kids put it away on alien turf?  Can the Sluggers force a 7^th game?

 

Both pitchers start out well with uneventful first innings.

 

The score is tied at 0 when, with one out in the Sluggers’ third, Cesar Cedeno doubles Eddie Collins to third.  Up comes Josh Gibson . . . he delivers a 2-run single to left!  Babe Herman also singles to bring up Ted Kluszewski with runners at 1^st and 2^nd.  He grounds out to Bill Terry who forces Herman at 2^nd, Gibby moving to 3^rd and Klu takes first.  Ernie Banks follows with another grounder to Terry to end the inning.

 

Scott sails through the fourth; he’s given up just one hit so far and looks very sharp.

 

In the Cincy 5^th, Mickey Mantle singles and Frank Baker reaches first courtesy of an Eddie Collins’ error at 2^nd.  Up comes Sam Crawford . . .he lines out to Collins.  Now, here’s Bob Boone . . . he lifts a harmless fly to Lenny Dykstra in center to end the threat.

 

The score holds at 2-0 until the 7^th when Dysktra, leading off for Louisville, doubles off the right-center wall.  He moves to third on a passed ball.  With Eddie Collins at the plate, the Kids have got to suspect a sacrifice bunt . . . IT’S A SUICIDE SQUEEZE!  Dysktra’s on the move with the pitch, it’s good bunt, but Baker fields it quickly . . . the throw home . . . IN TIME!!  Dysktra is out at home on a very close play.  Collins moves to first on the fielder’s choice.

 

Collins immediately steals second, but is stranded as the Sluggers fail to capitalize.

 

With one out in the 8^th, Klu singles and the Kids bring on Lindy McDaniel.  Banks works the count to 2-2 and then tees off on Lindy, scorching the ball into the LF sands for his 5th post-season homer.  Sluggers take an imposing 4-0 lead!

 

Top of the 9^th and the Kids send up JH Lloyd, Dimaggio, and Terry.  Lloyd knocks a slow roller down to third . . . and Boyer boots it for the Sluggers’ third error of the game.  Dimag, however, obligingly doubles up JHL with a sharp grounder to Banks: 6-4-3 and the Kids are down to their last out.  Looks like we’re going to a 7^th game!  Terry singles, bringing up Mantle.  The Mick goes deep to right . . . it’s GONE!  Boy, that DP looms large now.  Up comes Reggie Jackson.  He grounds out to Banks and, YES, we’re off to GAME SEVEN!!!
