Don Newcombe (17-16) vs. Bullet Joe Rogan (8-13)
Can Newk stave off elimination? With Regan rested, will the Kids go with a Rogan-Regan tandem to sew up the series?
Both pitchers start off well with just an infield single marring a perfect opening frame.
In the home second, though, RF Mickey Mantle singles to open the inning and DH Reggie Jackson slices a long fly down the LF line . . . it could go . . . IT’S GONE! A 2-run opposite field HR for Reggie puts the Kids up 2-0. With 2 outs, C Bob Boone triples but 2B Paul Molitor cannot score him.
Now, with 2 outs in the top of the third, Sluggers 3B Ken Boyer launches his 4th post-season HR to cut the lead in half.
In the home third, SS John Henry Lloyd singles and
CF Joe Dimaggio hits a funny little hopper
down to Eddie Collins .
. . he boots it to create a jam for Newk: 1st
and 2nd and no outs. Bill
Terry follows with tremendous blast, again to the opposite field, that soars over the LF fence for a magnificent
3-run
HR! The Kids are up 5-1 and the Sluggers
are going to the pen. In comes Clem Labine to settle things down.
Mantle greets him with a single to center,
still no one out . . . and, though
Rogan to the mound in the 4th. With one down, he gives up consecutive singles to create a first and third situation. Ernie Banks hits one in the hole at short . . . Lloyd makes a tremendous play and turns a hit into a DP to end the inning. Lloyd for series MVP???
In the 5th, Rogan gives up a single and
Boyer
follows with his second HR of the day to cut the lead to 5-3. Look out Cincy,
here comes
Bill Terry singles and Reggie does likewise to give the Kids 1st and 3rd with one out. Up steps Frank Baker. He grounds into a DP to end the threat and the inning.
Ted Kluszewski begins the visiting 6th with a triple of the right-center wall. Rogan gets Banks to roll out to Lloyd at short for one out, Klu holding. But Buck Leonard single scleanly to right, tying the score at 5. The Sluggers have come back from the brink; can they advance?? Rogan retires Dykstra and Boyer to hold the tie.
Labine continues his
wizardry on
the mound, getting the Kids to go
Chief Bender comes on to pitch for
Randy Myers comes in for the Sluggers, relieving Labine who did an outstanding job.
Lloyd works a walk to begin the frame. Joe D. smacks into a DP to erase the runner. Bill Terry walks and in steps Mantle. He walks and up comes Reggie . . . Myers doesn’t look as sharp as usual. But he gets Jax to K and we go to the 8th.
Bender does a nice job in the 8th, giving up a harmless single and the Sluggers do not score.
With one out in the bottom of the 8th, Crawford lines a double off the wall in right center. Myers looks spent, so in come Willie Hernandez, looking to get 5 outs. Bob Boone greets Willie with a sharp single to right; Cedeno throws home but it’s not in time! The Kids have tied the score at 6. Cool Papa Bell now in running for Boone; he represents the go-ahead run. Molitor grounds into a DP to end the inning. We go to the 9th with the score tied at 6!
Bender once again retires the Sluggers without a scare.
Bottom of the 9th. Lloyd leads off. He lines out. Up comes Dimaggio. He grounds weakly to short. Bill Terry works a walk and up comes Mantle. He grounds to second and we go to extra innings.
John Wetteland comes on in the 10th for Cincy. He walks Herman. Klu singles, Herman to second. Ernie Banks then hits a 3-run HR to excuse Wetteland and provide some margin for the Sluggers. In comes Sparky Lyle to pitch for the Kids. Lyle gets two outs then gives up a double to Boyer and a run-scoring single to Collins. It’s 10-6, Sluggers!
In the bottom of the 10th, the Kids
offer no
resistance to Hernandez and the game ends with a
